Mrs. BILJANA VANKOVSKA  Case Study of Balkan Conflicts

Born (1959) and lives in Macedonia. Ph.D. in political science (University of Skopje). Worked at the Institute of Defense, Faculty of Philosophy, University of Skopje since 1983, and is now Associate Professor and Head of the Institute of Defence. Has been visiting professor at several US universities, and served as guest Senior Research Fellow at Copenhagen Peace Research Institute (COPRI) in periods between 1997 and 2000.

Member of the Executive Board of the Research Committee on Armed Forces and Society of the International Political Science Association. International adviser at the Transnational Foundation for Peace and Future Studies in Lund, Sweden. Member of the International Board for the BalkanPeace Network, University of Ottawa. Member of several other international professional associations. Macedonia's representative at the PfP Consortium of Defense Academies and Security Study Institutes. Nominator for the Seoul Peace Price.

Published two books in Macedonian and authored several book chapters and a big number of journal articles published in inter alia Bulgaria, Croatia, Germany, India, Romania and USA."

Mrs. SOPHIA HOWLETT  Cooperation between Universities

Dean of Special and Extension Programmes, Central European University
Sophia Howlett received her BA in Literature from St John's, Cambridge, and her Ph.D. in Renaissance Philosophy and Drama from York University (UK). After teaching at York University, she was appointed in 1990 to a temporary lectureship at the University of Teesside. She was made a permanent lecturer in 1992. In 1994, whilst on sabbatical, Dr Howlett became a visiting lecturer with Civic Education Project (CEP) in Ukraine, teaching at the National University of Kiev Mohyla Academy and Kiev State University and guest lecturing throughout Ukraine. She also acted as Academic Co-ordinator for the CEP Ukraine Programme. In 1995, Dr Howlett joined CEP's staff as the Country Director for Ukraine. In this capacity, she founded CEP's Moldova programme. After leaving CEP, Dr Howlett worked with OSI Russia in the Kaliningrad region, performing a needs assessment for Higher Education and non-governmental organisations. Whilst in Kaliningrad, she taught for Kaliningrad State University and guest lectured throughout the Baltic. Finally, in 1997, she joined Central European University as the Director of a new unit to oversee and develop CEU's External Programmes. The unit developed rapidly and in 1999, she was appointed Dean of Special and Extension Programmes. Dr Howlett also teaches at CEU for the Gender and Culture Programme.

Mr. GORAN BULDIOSKI  Intercultural Learning

Currently on Graduate School of Education and Human Development at George Washington University - Certificate program on Human Resources Development.

Implemented more then 30 training courses on topics from Project Management, Organizational Development, Basic Management Skills in Not-for-profit sector, Youth work, Intercultural learning, ToT.

Applied intercultural approach in number of courses and training sessions of Macedonian Youth Council and Council of Europe, Youth Directorate.  Assessed the Non-governmental sector in Macedonia 1997 and 1999, leader of the team and writer of the final report for the Program for Empowerment of NGOs in Macedonia.  Extensive experience in training issues regards to Balkan region and substantial experience in Eastern Europe. Trainer & Consultant in the Civic Society Development Dept. in Macedonian Centre for International Co-operation (MCIC) 09/96 - 08/99.  Secretary General of Macedonian National Youth Council mandate: 03/97 - 03/98.  Represented of Macedonian National Youth Council in the relevant institutions at European level.  Delivering training courses on behalf of Council of Europe; Management of Development Foundation -Member of  Council of Europe, Youth Directorate - Pool of Trainers.

Mr. FLORIAN BIEBER   Conflict Resolution in Multinational States

Born in Luxembourg, 1973.  Studied at the Trinity College, Hartfort-Connecticut, finished the Master in History and Political Science at the University of Vienna, gained the MA degree in Southest European Studies at the Central European University in Budapest. Now he is Ph.D. candidate in Political Sciences at the University in Vienna, a scholar of the Luxembourgish Ministry of Education.  Currently Instructor in International relations and European Studies department at the Central European University (CEU) in Budapest.  Founder and Editor of "Balkan Academic News", an electronic list with over 500 subscribers. Worked as Assistant for International Affairs at the Rectors office at CEU(98,99), as well as Assisting with the teaching of German courses and organization of cultural events at the Goethe-Institute in Damascus, Syria.  Correspondent for Southeastern Europe to "Tageblatt" - Luxembourg.  Since this year Member of the Advisory Board to "New Balkans"-Tirana; Member of the Editorial Board of "Policy Advocate" - Belgrade and Co-Editor to "Southeast European Politics" - Budapest.  Wrote many chapters and articles, book reviews and peer-reviewed articles.  Forthcoming edited volume (together with Dz. Sokolovic) on "Bosnia-Herzegovina and Southeastern Europe Coexistence, Cooperation and Reconstruction in a Multiethnic Society".

Mr. JAN OBERG  Conflict Reconciliation

Born 1951, Danish, Ph.D. in sociology, peace and future researcher. Former director of the Lund University Peace Research Institute; former secretary-general of the Danish Peace Foundation; former member of the Danish government's Committee on security and disarmament. Visiting professor in Japan; on Scientific Committee of International University for Peoples' Initiatives for Peace, IUPIP, in Italy. Co-initiator of the Danish Highschool for Peace and the Danish Centre for Conflict Resolution. Some 3600 pages of published academic works. Honorary doctoral degree from the Buddhist Soka University, Tokyo. Columnist in Nordic newspapers. Founder of the Transnational(TFF)- Peace and Future Research Foundation and Chairman of the board since 1997, director of the TFF and head of its Conflict-Mitigation team to ex-Yugoslavia and Georgia.

Mr. DZEMAL SOKOLOVIC  Open Borders

Born in 1947 in Konhic, BiH.  PhD in Sociology.  Permanent Professor of Sociology at the University of Sarajevo, the Faculty of Political Science. After leaving Sarajevo in November 1992: Researcher at Faculty of Social Sciences in Ljubljana, Slovenia; study stay at the Institut für Politische Wissenschaft der Universität Heidelberg, Germany; visiting Professor at Graz University, Austria. Currently teaching at the Department of Comparative Politics at the University of Bergen, Norway. Founder and President of the Institute for Strengthening Democracy in Bosnia, Konjic, BiH, organizer of the (this year third) international Seminar "Democracy and Human Rights in Multi-ethnic Societies"Teaching experience in General Sociology, Sociology of Labor, and Social Anthropology. Research mainly on  alienation and work, community development, relations among ethnic groups in Bosnia and Hercegovina, relations in socialism, democracy and nation state  Over 130 articles and books published. Major books include Labour and Self Alienation, Individual and Community, Capital and Socialism, and  textbooks for high school and university courses. Recent articles include  analyses of causes of the Bosnian conflict. Over 3.500 total pages published  in Bosnian, English, French, Slovene, Macedonian, Hungarian and  Norwegian.


Mr. DRAGAN STOJOVIC  NGOs as Diplomatic Actors

Born in 1970 in Podgorica, Montenegro.  Finished the studies at the Faculty of Political Sciences at the Belgrade University, on the Department for International relations.  MA candidate on the thesis: The Role of the International Financial Institutions on Tranzition Process in FR of Yugoslavia.  Currently Research Assistant at the Institute of International Politics and Economics in Belgrade; Researcher in the Menagement Center in Belgrade (NGO); Member of the Editorial Board of the Policy Advocate journal; Researcher in the Association for the Study of Foreign Policy (NGO) in Kotor, Montenegro; Secretary in International Scientific Forum Danube - River of Cooperation, Belgrade(NGO).  Published scientific articles concerning the issues of: Dept Crisis in South-Eastern Europe, IMF and External Dept Problem of Adriatic Countries, influence of International Financial Institutions on the development, Balkan conflicts etc.
